It was suggested a week ago that Arsenal supremo were ready to make a move for Lazio midfielder Hernanes. The Brazilian international, nicknamed ‘The Prophet’, is said to be the target of another big splash in the transfer market from ArseneWenger, - following the purchase of Mesut Ozil in the summer.
The price-tag attached to the reports is in the region of £25 million but Hernanes is a superb player. Likely to go to the World Cup in Brazil next summer, he can play anywhere in the midfield - including holding deep or sitting behind the frontman. He is versatile, top quality and probably worth that figure.
A deal in January is unlikely as Hernanes has already confirmed that no decision will be made on his future until after the World Cup.
“I’m happy and satisfied at Lazio, but I’m firstly thinking about the World Cup. That is what is in my head right now and then we’ll see about a contract extension.”
Today has seen Lazio end their silence on the matter, with former player and current sporting director Igli Tare suggesting he will stay. First of all, the Albanian called him inconsistent, which probably didn’t go down well - but he then went on to be glowing about the Brazilian’s future in Rome.
But when it came to the idea of him leaving, he seemed assured that Hernanes would be going nowhere this winter, or next summer:
“Despite his inconsistency, Hernanes remains a fundamental player for us…Every time that I have spoken to him or his agent, I have been given the impression that he sees this as his home. He knows what Lazio can give him, what he can have in Rome. It is vital for us that we can guarantee him an important team. You never know what will happen in life and one day he could move somewhere else, but that day is still a long way off.”
Hernanes is contracted to the Biancocelesti until 2015, and Tare seems to think he will be at the club until then.
But will we seemingly have to wait until next summer to find out if he will ever grace the Premier League with his presence.
