Everton latest: Gibson could return this season, Everton 'perfect' for Barkley

All the latest news and gossip from Goodison Park.

Everton midfielder Darron Gibson could be out of action for the rest of the season. The Republic of Ireland international hurt himself whilst on international duty, and has gone under the knife to repair a damaged anterior cruciate ligament.

However Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is hopeful that he could return at some point this season:

"I was expecting the worse but with the scans on Wednesday we are really positive now. It is an anterior cruciate ligament but the whole structure of the knee is perfectly fine and it is going to be straightforward surgery. I am looking forward to seeing him back hopefully this season and in that way it was good, positive news taking into consideration what it could have been."

Gareth Barry has told Everton starlet Ross Barkley to stay with the club. The on-loan Manchester City midfielder believes that Goodison Park is the best place to continue his development - despite reported interest from Chelsea and Manchester United:

‘’I think Everton is the perfect club to be learning his trade and the more he plays the more he learns and he will keep improving while keeping his feet on the ground, which will be ideal for him.’’

Leighton Baines has featured twice for England since the last Everton round-up - and calls for him to be the number one left-back, ahead of Ashley Cole have grown since he impressed in both games.

He bagged an impressive assist against Poland and clearly backs himself to make the position his own:

“With regards to trying to overtake him, you just keep trying your best and then it’s the manager’s decision… The great thing is that I hope he feels he’s got two guys that he can depend on. Ash has got this wealth of experience that I could never match. That’s something I’m never going to get, really. That adds weight to his case, but hopefully the manager has got confidence in me from when he has had to bring me in.’’

Everton, among other big name European clubs have officially lost out on Keisuke Honda. Reports in Japan have now confirmed that the CSKA Moscow playmaker will be signing for AC Milan on New Year’s Day 2014.
