Leverkusen are currently joint second on 19 points with Borussia Dortmund and a single point behind league leaders Bayern Munich.
Hyypia takes his side into an away game against mid-table Hoffenheim this Friday and if Leverkusen secure the win, they’ll go top of the table before Dortmund and Munich play on the Saturday.
It would be a remarkable achievement by the Liverpool favourite considering the recent dominance of the ‘big two’ in German and European football over the last 12 months.
Leverkusen have made a fantastic start to the season with six wins, one draw and a single defeat from games played so far. They have scored more goals than Bayern Munich, conceding just one more than Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund have the more difficult of Saturday games against fifth placed Hannover, with Bayern Munich going up against mid-table Mainz 05 at the Allianz Arena.
Munich are yet to lose a game while Dortmund have the same record in terms of wins, draws and losses as Leverkusen this season.
Hyypia is someone who has been tipped for the Liverpool job at some point in the future and all the while he’s able to match the pace of Germany’s big two, he’ll do his managerial credentials no harm at all.
It will be interesting to see how Hyypia and Leverkusen react if they manage to stay top beyond this weekend but they are proof to everyone that hard work, a good team spirit and individual quality can get the better of two very strong European sides at the moment.
What do you make of Hyypia’s progress at Bayer Leverkusen? Are you surprised?
