Five signings to guarantee Manchester United retain the title

Ezequiel Garay

Manchester United have suffered a slow start to the season under new boss David Moyes as he navigates as he negotiates the twists and turns of being manager of the Premier League champions.

However, after a disappointing start and a disappointing summer with a number of failed transfer deals, Moyes has insisted he is prepared to spend in January to get the Red Devils back where they belong – at the top of the table.

Here are five signings who could help them on their way…

1) Lars Bender – DM from Bayer Leverkusen (£25M)

Defensive midfielder Lars Bender would be the man to shore up United's midfield. The German international would allow United's forward players to flourish, and play Marouane Fellaini further forward rather than in the defence. Arsenal are also interested but isn't it time United bought a German?

2) Ezequiel Garay – CD from Benfica (£16M)

Another player heavily linked with a move to United who recently revealed he was very close to signing this summer is this 27-year-old Argentine of Benfica and formerly Real Madrid. He is now at the peak of his playing career, combining experience and maturity with physical supremacy that plug the gaps being left wide open by 34-year-old Rio Ferdinand and 31-year-old captain Nemanja Vidic.

3) Leighton Baines – LB from Everton (£18M)

This England fullback was David Moyes’ number one target and number failure this summer – United tried to prise his prom Everton from the opening day to the closing day to no avail but, I suspect, if they just upped their price very slightly, the Toffees might crumble and you just know he’d be worth every penny.

4) Koke – MC from Athletico Madrid (£16M)

This exceptionally gifted 21-year-old Spaniard is hailed as the ‘new Xavi’ in his homeland where he is employed by Athletico Madrid whose youth system he graduated from in his hometown. Even at his tender age and with the abundance of quality options the national team have in his position as a midfield playmaker, Koke has already earned 5 caps for the senior team.

5) Angel Di Maria – L/R W from Real Madrid (£15M)

Finally, United have seen young Adnan Januzaj break through the ranks and can look forward to a bright future for January signing Wilfried Zaha too but it cannot and must not be ignored that Ashley Young, Nani and even Antonio Valencia have seen better days and United need their wide threat back with a bang.

25-year-old Argentine Di Maria would be the perfect remedy to the Red Devils’ woes on the flanks and the two promising youngsters could learn from his experience greatly.

Imagine a starting XI of:

De Gea-Rafael-Vidic-Garay-Baines-Carrick-Koke-Januzaj-Di Maria-Rooney-Van Persie

...and a bench with this lot waiting to impress:

Lindegaard, Evans, Bender, Fellaini, Kagawa, Hernandez, Welbeck

That would pretty much guarantee United reclaim the title this term.
