Spurs captain Michael Dawson has said he wants to repay the faith the club have put in him after signing a new three year deal with the club – meaning he is contracted at White Hart Lane until the summer of 2016.

Dawson told the club’s website: ‘I was delighted to be offered the new deal, I thank the Chairman, the gaffer and now I’ve got to go out there, play well and try to repay them.

‘I remember the day I signed – or should that be night – deadline day, January 2005, going from the hotel, driving down Luxborough Lane and arriving at Spurs Lodge with Andy Reid. I remember it as if it was yesterday.’

Forward Erik Lamela is fearful that he may miss out on a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad unless he becomes a regular in Andre Villas-Boas’ side.

The Metro quotes him as saying: ‘The national coach called on me when I was in Rome but now I’m playing in England I have to adapt quickly.’

Winger Andros Townsend has said he will have to maintain a high standard if he is to earn a place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the World Cup in Brazil in the summer.

Townsend said: ‘I have to keep playing well in every game for Spurs. I can’t think about the World Cup, I have to focus on my Tottenham performances.

‘If I have a couple of bad games there are world-class players that can come in.’
