Arsenal flop: €20m man would have thrived at Manchester United

Ezequiel Garay 2

Former Gunner Nelson Vivas has bemoaned Ezequiel Garay's failed transfer to Manchester United.

Ezequiel Garay revealed this week that his proposed transfer to Manchester United collapsed when Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

It was widely reported there was a 'gentleman's agreement' between United and Benfica, with a fee agreed at €20 million.

With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both having contracts due to expire in 2014, the logic behind the transfer for the 26-year-old was solid, but David Moyes did not pursue the deal.

This is United's loss according to one man, former Argentine international Nelson Vivas, compatriot of Garay.

Vivas had an unsuccessful spell at Arsenal between 1998 and 2001 and knows what it is like to play in the Premier League, and he is certain the Benfica man would have been well equipped to cope at Old Trafford.

He said: "Like all players the Argentine national team, Garay is prepared to play in the best leagues in the world.

"For example, Heinze spent many years at Manchester United and I think Garay is prepared for such a challenge.

"Undoubtedly Benfica have benefited greatly from his stay at the club, however, in January or after the World Cup, the major European clubs will try to sign him again."

It could well be that United head back for him in January with the initial leg-work and contact with Benfica, Garay, and his agent previously set up.

New boss David Moyes has had a chance to work with existing centre-back options Vidic, Ferdinand, Smalling, Jones and Evans, and will surely be coming to a decision regarding the contracts of the first two.

If not, they certainly run the risk of allowing other clubs to steal in for the defender, and missing out as they have so recently on targets. Wherever he ends up, Vivas sounds like he has the confidence Garay will be a big success.

Should United go back in for Garay? What do you think?
