The teenage midfield sensation is being linked with different £15 million moves away from Derby this winter, with interest coming from Liverpool and Tottenham in the Premier League.
It’s unreasonable that Dawkins could be used in part exchange for a player like Hughes, because the Derby man is rated as one of the best midfield talents in the country and Dawkins certainly isn’t worth £15 million.
However, Spurs could get an agreement to have first choice on Hughes this winter, allowing them to have first refusal over the teenager if Daniel Levy is willing to commission such a big for a player who has never played top flight football before.
Dawkins has only ever made one senior appearance for Tottenham, which means he’s no loss to the first team at White Hart Lane.
However, if he gives the club even a tiny advantage in the race to sign Hughes alongside Liverpool, then it’s a decision that will have paid off for Tottenham and one which could benefit them significantly over the next few seasons.
Tottenham have been linked with Hughes as far back as the winter of 2011, which shows they have been following the player for a considerable amount of time.
He’s a far better player now than he was as a 16-year-old and unfortunately for Tottenham, Derby know how good he is and so do Liverpool, which creates fine margins and if Spurs want him, they have to work this situation to their advantage.
