The Belgian is playing second fiddle to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, who currently control the two centre back positions in the Arsenal back four and he’s admitted that in a World Cup year, that’s not ideal.
Vermaelen’s season started late due to a back injury and the current form of Arsenal’s defence has meant that he’s not been able to force his way back into the picture in terms of the Premier League and Champions League.
“I'll have to think about that when it's necessary. January is still a few months ahead. Of course, never playing will not be the ideal situation for me to go to the World Cup, that's for sure,” he told the Daily Mail.
There would certainly be a long line of potential customers looking to buy the defender should he become officially available because as defenders go, he’s got everything.
He’s quick, he’s good on the ball, he’s good in the air and he has experience of leading a side, which is important for any central defender because he can organise the team as well as the back four.
Vermaelen seems ready to listen to offers in January although considering Arsenal’s lack of cover at the back, keeping him is vitally important for Arsene Wenger and one of the toughest challenges the manager will face this winter.
If the club can hang onto him and he does feature in the World Cup squad for Belgium, it will do Arsenal’s chances of getting him committed to a new contract the world of good.
His current deal expires in the summer of 2015, which means if the Gunners can just get through January without him leaving, they’ll have a chance to talk to him about a new deal at the end of the season and things could well have changed by that point as the man himself points out.
Here’s what Arsenal fans are making of his comments and a potential exit.
If Vermaelen leaves Arsenal.. Does that mean Arteta's captain? :DDD #foreverproudofmyevertonlads— Elia (@eliajoy) October 15, 2013
I'm not convinced Vermaelen is actually all that good, but surely there is zero chance of us letting him leave in January.— Flan (@Flannyballs) October 15, 2013
And yeah he should be stripped off captaincy... What a moron! #vermaelen— Humail Nafees (@humailnafees) October 15, 2013
Vermaelen said he'll wait until January before thinking about his future. A good squad management and everyone will be happy. #AFC— The Cöach (@Alex_Hervo) October 15, 2013
@arse2mouse And as much as I question Vermaelen, we have absolutely no other centre halves. Can't see him being released.— Flan (@Flannyballs) October 15, 2013
Vermaelen wants to play football, of course he does. I'd be a lot more worried if he didn't, but chances of him leaving in January are zero— Bergkamp is gÖd (@Orangeiceman10) October 15, 2013
