Christian Atsu may be out on loan with Vitesse Arnhem, but he showed a glimpse of his quality against Egypt today.
The reason for the shock resulted from the fact The Blues already had a litany of players capable of playing in the three positions behind the striker, the arrival of a third for a fee of £3.5 million seemed bizarre.
But the winger, who had been linked with Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur previously, is clearly one for the future - so was sent out to continue gaining first team football at Chelsea’s farm club Vitesse Arnhem.
He is over in Holland along with the likes of Lucas Piazon, Gael Kakuta and Patrick van Aanholt - as Vitesse attempt to launch an offensive on the Eredivisie title.
But while not a regular in Holland, he is still among the many talented players in the Ghana team.
Ghana took on Egypt earlier today, in the first leg of a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Considered a tough game, against the continents most competent side in terms of Afcon titles, The Black Stars certainly didn’t make it look hard.
They thrashed Egypt 6-1, giving themselves one foot in Brazil next summer.
And Chelsea fans will be pleased to know that Atsu was among the scorers.
He hit a powerful strike from 30 yards that fizzed beyond the Egyptian stopper to complete the rout.
