The midfielder has been one of the surprise performers for the club this season, capped off by a goal in England’s 4-1 win against Montenegro.

Townsend currently earns around £6,000 per week with the club ready to improve that figure to around £15,000 per seven days.

Spurs right-back Kyle Walker says he expects Townsend to be named in England’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil, should they qualify.

England play their last qualifying match tomorrow night needing a win to be sure of finishing top of their group and qualifying automatically for the tournament.

“Yes, I think (he could make the squad). I hope (so). I hope this is just a stepping stone for him to showcase his talent and go on to do big things,” said Walker.
