£17m-rated Garay confirms Moyes pulled plug on United deal; striker move draws closer

A select round-up of morning news relating to Manchester United

It was one of the most regularly reported rumours of the summer: Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay would be joining Manchester United. But when it did not happen, it seemed to be little more than another white-lie in a rumour mill awash with them.

That is until now, with the player himself revealing he was set for a £17million move to Old Trafford, only for David Moyes to pull the plug on a deal Sir Alex Ferguson had been working on for some time.

In quotes published by the Mirror this morning, Garay has revealed he was all but a United player until Moyes opted not to pay Benfica’s asking price.

I believed I was going to Manchester United in the summer,” he said. “The deal was nearly closed but finally Benfica did not accept the offer.

I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that is not a problem.”

With both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the final year of their contracts, and doubts remaining about their long-term futures, Garay could have been the perfect solution. But alas it was not to be.

In other news, Brazilian website Sambafoot has picked up on reports in England claiming United are close to a deal for Bruno Gomes.

It has been claimed the striker was set to surprise many and sign for either Udinese or Sao Paulo. But the latest whispers suggest he could soon get his wish of being a United player.
