Pires: Arsenal should carry on spending, as Croatian starlet and Rooney linked again

All the latest news and gossip from this morning at The Emirates.

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has urged the Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to carry on spending big at The Emirates.

Mesut Ozil arrived in North London from Real Madrid for a club record £42.5 million this summer - much to the enjoyment and fascination of the Gunners fans.

Pires himself is such a fan, and is hoping that this is not the end of their big-spending tactics:

''If you look at all the successful clubs who won titles and trophies, they always buy after they have been successful. There is no question that Arsenal are at a high level at this moment. They are playing to the kind of football played during my time at the club. And Ozil – well, he is world-class. But there appears to be a new financial philosophy at Arsenal now. Arsene can spend money, more than he has been able to do before and I believe he should add to the squad when he can."

Arsenal were one of many teams linked with Belgian teenager Julien Ngoy this summer. The 15-year-old is a highly rated talent, who has attended the same academy as Romelu Lukaku.

But he has signed for Stoke City.

The deal actually went through two weeks ago, and is a real coup for The Potters, considering Manchester City and Real Madrid were also keen.

Arsenal are being linked with a move for Sime Vrsaljko. The Croatian international is currently with Genoa, and was linked with a move to London last summer.

Now, with Bacary Sagna still out of contract at the end of the season, he could arrive as the new right-back.

Yesterday it was reported by Goal.com that Arsenal were being encouraged by Manchester United to sign Wayne Rooney in January. It is believed that Rooney will not discuss a new contract at Old Trafford, a deal that expires in just 18 months.

Therefore United could cash in on the in-form striker this winter.
