Reports in Portugal claim Monaco are readying a £42million January bid for Eliaquim Mangala.
Monaco signed Mangala’s former teammates Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez during the summer, and newspaper Record claims the Ligue 1 club will try to make it a hat-trick of signings from the Estadio do Dragao with a January bid.
Indeed, when Jose Mourinho first returned to Stamford Bridge, reports claimed Mangala was his intended first signing. And when that deal failed to materialise, the Mirror claimed that the Blues would return with a January bid in an effort to ward off Monaco.
But it seems Claudio Ranieri’s side are already readying a sizeable bid, and if it does match the Frenchman’s release-clause, either Mourinho or Manuel Pellegrini may have to revise their budget if they wish to bring him to their club.
With Manchester United also said to be interested, the 22-year-old may be the most sought-after defender in Europe when the transfer window reopens.
But if the latest reports are true, Monaco are prepared to spend big to secure him as swiftly as they moved during the summer.
Should Chelsea or City break the bank for Mangala, or should they focus on cheaper alternatives?
