Victor Valdes is out of contract in the summer, and has been linked with a shock move to Stamford Bridge according to reports in France.
Speculation continues over the future of Spain international goalkeeper Victor Valdes, who is out of contract at the end of this season and has stated that he wants to leave Barcelona for a new challenge.
Despite rumours linking the Catalan stopper with switches to Monaco and Manchester City, Chelsea are reportedly also weighing up a move for Valdes also.
A report in French newspaper Le 10 Sport has even suggested that Jose Mourinho’s men have already come to an agreement with Valdes, who will join the west London side until 2017 at an annual salary of €10 million.
Despite the lack of a credible source, Chelsea are in a position at the moment where they do not need Valdes. As good as the Barcelona man is, it seems unlikely that the Blues would look to add another goalkeeper to their squad due to the talent already at Mourinho’s disposal.
Current number one Petr Cech is a firm favourite of the Portuguese manager and has been in solid form over the last 12 months. The Czech Republic international will most likely command the Stamford Bridge number one jersey for a number of years more, but his deputy is already at a standard where he could challenge for the starting berth.
Thibaut Courtois is in his third season on loan at Atletico Madrid, and continues to impress with excellent performances for the Spanish capital city side. The giant Belgian has grown in stature over the last number of seasons at the Vicente Calderon, and there was an argument in the off-season that he was already at a standard to be Chelsea’s first-choice.
With Courtois one of the brightest young goalkeepers in the world, it appears that it will only be a matter of time before he is recalled to Chelsea and able to fight for a place in Mourinho’s starting XI. The 21-year-old is getting valuable experience in La Liga and the Champions League with Atletico, and has also already become a mainstay in an impressive national team ahead of Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet.
With Valdes leaving Barcelona, Courtois has been linked with a move to Camp Nou to replace the outgoing man. If given a choice, the Premier League side would be best advised to recall Courtois to fight for a first-team place, rather than trying to pick up Valdes on a free transfer.
