Karim Benzema’s season with Real Madrid has been lukewarm to say the least. The Frenchman has not scored for Los Blancos since August and has recently found himself out of the team, with youngster Alvaro Morata now starting to look the favoured player in the eyes of Carlo Ancelotti.
His poor form has now seen him linked with an exit away from the Spanish capital in January. Reports in Spain have recently intimated that the French international could be on his way out of the club for a fee in the region of £17 million - as they look to offload the expensively salaried striker.
Chelsea would appear the favourites to snap him up. He previously worked with Jose Mourinho at The Bernabeu and he would walk into the starting XI, given the side’s current striking situation.
But Arsenal are also said to be keen on the striker, as first-class competition for current front-man Olivier Giroud.
Which would replicate the current situation in the French national team.
At the moment the pair are embroiled in a scrap for the international starting spot - and both put their best foot forward in a recent friendly against Australia.
Giroud started the game, and scored two fantastic goals in Les Bleus thrashing of Australia. But Benzema was also in on the act. He added the sixth in the 6-0 win against the Socceroos, as a reminder to both Didier Deschamps and Carlo Ancelotti of his obvious talents.
And Giroud himself has been speaking about his rival, and potential team-mate, in the French press:
"It's been two years now that I'm in the France team… I have always been very patient, as throughout my career...I knew that I will have the chance to express myself on the ground. That day has arrived. I understand that a chance was allowed to Karim, perhaps more than any other. He is a talented striker. We all know. I do not have a problem with it, do not worry. "
It comes in a week where Didier Deschamps has admitted the two cannot play together - but Giroud’s confident words suggest he would not be concerned - even if Arsenal did snap up Benzema.
Do you think Benzema could arrive at The Emirates? Would Giroud be worried then?
