With the Montpellier midfielder linked with a move to Old Trafford, we tell you exactly who he is and what he would bring to United.
For those who have watched Manchester United this season, one thing is very clear – they lack a creative spark.
Some will say that spark is sitting on the bench – in the form of Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa – while others may claim the emergence of Adnan Januzaj will give David Moyes’ side a much-needed boost in that area.
But the truth is Januzaj’s Old Trafford career is only just beginning while, for whatever reason, Kagawa does not appear to be the answer Moyes is looking for.
With little wrong with United’s defence or attack, and with Michael Carrick continuing to do what he does best, United’s next soiree into the transfer window is likely to be for a more creative midfielder.
And while the best business is rarely done in the winter – despite the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra staking claims to the contrary – United have been linked with another round of post-Christmas shopping, with Remy Cabella seemingly near the top of the list.
Plenty of stories have claimed United are interested in him, but who exactly is he and what can United expect if he does arrive either in January or next summer?
Cabella is a 23-year-old attacking midfielder who currently plays for French club Montpellier.
Whilst able to play anywhere across the midfield line, he most regularly plays centrally, and it is from here that he has already scored four goals and provided two assists from just five appearances this season.
He also scored once in the match where he started on the right, and has already been crowned man-of-the-match three times in just seven starts.
His first goal of the campaign came on the opening weekend, in a 1-1 draw against champions Paris Saint Germain. And after further strikes against Evian and Ajaccio it was his outstanding performance against Lyon prior to the international break that may have generated the latest headlines.
With two goals and two assists in a 5-1 win, Cabella tore Lyon apart. And while Montpellier are currently eighth in the French league, it is not through a lack of trying on the midfielder’s part.
Having already been compared to Zinedine Zidane, and with his club president claiming in the summer that it would take a bid of £100million to prise him away, United will do extremely well to get him. But if they do so, they will be getting something of a footballing diamond.
Now in his third season at Montpellier, after previously playing for Arles-Avignon, Cabella appears to have found a new level of performance this year.
Last season he scored seven goals and provided eight assists in 31 league appearances. But the way he has started this campaign that record looks set to be obliterated.
Also strong when it comes to defensive contributions, the 23-year-old could be exactly what United are looking for.
A man with excellent vision when it comes to through-balls, an eye for goal and the ability to dribble past opponents – he may not be worth £100million, but he looks well worth a bid if Montpellier are willing to accept a more realistic offer.
Would you like to see United move for Cabella in the future?
