Despite England picking up a resounding victory against Montenegro at Wembley on Friday night, they are still in need of a victory against Poland in the final game of their qualifying campaign.
Poland let them down yesterday, falling to a 1-0 defeat against England’s nearest rivals Ukraine, which essentially makes Tuesday’s tie against Poland at Wembley a must win.
But what if Ukraine lose? Well they are playing San Marino so you can get that fanciful wondering out of your head box right away.
Ukraine had one player in particular who stood out for them against Poland yesterday, and it was one of their flying wingers.
Much has been made of Yevhen Konoplyanka before, while Andriy Yarmolenko sometimes sneaks under the radar.
Well there was nothing under the radar about his performance against Poland in Kharkiv.
The Dynamo Kiev man was linked with a £12 million deadline day move to Liverpool last month, and they are reportedly set to battle AC Milan for his signature in the winter - and you can see why.
First he got the ball rolling, and, seemingly, the party started in the commentary booth. His goal in the 63rd minute sent the Ukrainian commentators into raptures - completely foregoing any neutrality in their vocation.
They screamed as he reeled away from his excellent touch and bent finish with the Gareth Bale trademark heart celebration - and in the end that proved to be the winner…
But it did not stop there. YouTube has been awash this morning with Yarmolenko ‘elasitico’ videos - or the flip-flap, as you might know it. Late in the game, the winger decided to bamboozle Polish midfielder, and former Wolves player, Slawomir Peszko with a delightful piece of skill…
Now he forces England into a crunch game with Poland for qualification, something we have, unfortunate, previous with.
Would Yarmolenko be a good signing for Liverpool?
