England will reportedly hand Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Andros Townsend a start against Montenegro in the World Cup qualifier at Wembley this evening - as Roy Hodgson decides to go against type and go on the offensive in the 20:00 kick off.
A year ago, Townsend could not get a look in at Tottenham Hotspur - but after joining former boss Harry Redknapp on loan for the end of the 2012-13 season we soon saw what he was capable of.
His pace, dribbling ability and long-range shooting were massive weapons in QPR’s eventually fruitless fight against relegation.
This summer, despite controversy over him having to leave the England Under-21 squad over betting allegations, he was told by Andre Villas-Boas that he has a place in the Spurs side this season - and that has been the case.
Townsend has played eight times for Spurs this season, scoring once, but has been one of their more swashbuckling players. As yet he has not played for England, but was called up for the recent games against Moldova and Ukraine as cover for Theo Walcott.
Walcott underwent abdominal surgery last month, ruling him out of the game - so it appears Hodgson has decided that Townsend is the best alternative for the Arsenal man.
It is a remarkable turnaround for a player, who at aged just 22, has already played for 10 clubs due to the amount of loan deals away from Tottenham he has had.
The inclusion has caused quite a stir on Twitter, and in my belly. I boldly said he should start for England this evening in my morning rant about the England team … and he is - so my neck is kind of on the line here.
Read all about here: The team England should play against Montenegro tonight ... but won't
Meanwhile there has been plenty of reaction on Twitter, especially as Townsend is set to start while the out of sorts Arsenal man Jack Wilshere looks set to be on the bench.
Here are some Tweets on the news…
Rumours Andros Townsend starts. If so can't see it being 4-3-3. Must be playing Welbeck left of midfield 4, otherwise looks very unbalanced— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 11, 2013
So, if Roy plays Townsend, Gerrard, Lampard and Welbeck does that mean he's given up on midfield? Or his career?— Tony Evans (@TonyEvansTimes) October 11, 2013
Great to see Andros Townsend getting his reward for his start to the season. People have long called for picks based on form...there you go!— Jake Humphrey (@mrjakehumphrey) October 11, 2013
Fact of the day – Andros Townsend has had 26 shots this season, scoring 0. #englandexpects— Mark Coughlan (@coffers83) October 11, 2013
Although he's spurs scum, I do believe Townsend should be an England regular, the lad's quality.— Mr Ace ⚽ (@LateefAce) October 11, 2013
50 - Andros Townsend has attempted (50) and completed (33) more dribbles than any other player in the Premier League this season. Tricky.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) October 11, 2013
Glad too see Townsend start tbh, impressed for Spurs this season!— H (@HarryKilmartin_) October 11, 2013
