Paul Pogba: Arsenal's Abou Diaby is one of my idols

Abou Diaby 2

The former Manchester United midfielder has named Arsenal's Abou Diaby as one of the players he looks up to along with Manchester City's Yaya Toure.

Paul Pogba is a player who is currently the subject of wild transfer speculation after Juventus admitted they could not refuse a gigantic bid for his services.

Arsenal are one of the clubs formerly, and subsequently presently, linked with his services - and he has a reason to take a particular interest in the Gunners.

Pogba though dismissed such talk, saying: "At the moment I don't see myself anywhere but Juventus."

It was his later comments which have piqued our interest.

Describing his idols, players he models his game on - he named a perhaps surprise choice.

Asked who he tries to emulate, he told Gazetto dello Sport: "Yaya Toure and Abou Diaby, I'm very similar to them,"

"The strongest midfielder in the world? Except my team-mates, it is a struggle between Yaya Toure and (Andres) Iniesta."

While of course Diaby's cruel injury record makes him a bit of an unfortunate figure of fun in England, Pogba's comments come as a reminder that the midfielder is on his day, a fantastic player.

Arsenal fleetingly saw that at the beginning of last season, and so did France, with Diaby getting their qualifying campaign off to a flier with a winning goal away to Finland.

Tonight it is Pogba who could be called upon to help seal France's World Cup place when they host the Scandinavians.

If he can emulate the Arsenal man by scoring an all-important goal, his words will certainly take on increased significance.
