8 top players available on a free transfer at the end of the season

Chelsea's captain features, along with transfer targets for Liverpool, Tottenham, and Manchester United.

We're only in October now but there are some great players who will be able to leave on a free transfer come May.

Clubs will be looking to tie them down perhaps, otherwise from January onwards they could be open to Bosman transfers.

Andrea Pirlo - 34-year-old - Juventus

Pirlo has already been linked with a move to Spurs at the end of the season, and if he were to leave Turin, he would have numerous suitors. Even at his age he is still one of the best passers of the ball in the world. He has been at the top of the game almost all his career, and could easily manage another year or two. His next move would likely to see him play out of Italy for the first time.

Victor Valdes - 31-year-old - Barcelona

The Barcelona 'keeper has won 19 trophies with the club having been the first choice for the last ten years. However he has already announced that he does not wish to renew his contract. Barça have already started looking for a replacement, Courtois and Reina are on the radar. Having made 513 appearances for the club (and yet only 17 for Spain) he clearly fancies a challenge elsewhere and will no doubt move to another high-profile club.

Esteban Cambiasso - 33-year-old - Inter Milan

Cambiasso is coming to the end of his 10th season at the club and Inter fans would be loathe to see him leave. However talks to extend his contract have broken down, and he may leave at the end of the season. He has been a instrumental part of Inter's team in the last decade, none more so than when they won the Champions League in 2010. Not many of that side remain and Cambiasso could be the next to depart.

Xabi Alonso - 31-year-old - Real Madrid

Madrid look set to allow Alonso to leave the club having recruited Asier Illaramendi as a long-term replacement. Liverpool have already been linked with their former player and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in a red shirt again. Other clubs in England would be interested but I doubt Xabi would choose anywhere but Anfield. Once quoted as saying "I am still a Liverpool fan and will be forever, absolutely" and that he will raise his Liverpool-born son as a Red supporter.

John Terry - 32-year-old - Chelsea

Chelsea fans will be hoping that John Terry's contract can be sorted out in a quicker manner than Frank Lampard's was last year. Mourinho is a fan of Terry's and his performances so far this season have shown that he is still a class defender. Abramovich should be convinced to hand out another deal, but he may be allowed to move on.

Jeremy Menez - 26-year-old - Paris Saint-Germain

The French winger may not be someone that PSG want to lose, but he may leave in search of guaranteed first team Football. The Parisian side have a very talented squad and Menez's place cannot be guaranteed. He could leave as early as January in order to stake a claim for a place in France's team for the World Cup. Liverpool have been linked with the player in the past.

Robert Lewandowski - 25-year-old - Borussia Dortmund

Perhaps the most publicised player to be available on a free come the end of the season. Obviously Dortmund would love to keep the Polish striker but he seems adamant on a move. Bayern Munich remain the likely destination and it was even a possibility for him to move this summer just gone. Dortmund look like they'll hold onto him for another year, and aside from Bayern Munich, they'll be a line of clubs queuing up to sign the Warsaw born player.

Tom Ince - 21-year-old - Blackpool

There has been a lot of hype surrounding Ince junior, and his impressive performances for England Under 21's have increased his popularity. He rejected a move to Cardiff in the transfer window, but plenty of other top flight clubs have been linked with a move for the pacey winger. Even Juventus and Napoli have been rumoured to be weighing up a cut price deal for him in January. Whether his Dad Paul would want to cash in on him remains to be seen, but I expect there to be a lot of scouts watching him progress whilst Paul Ince waits outside the stadium for the next five games.
