Why Valdes to Chelsea is a conspiracy to unsettle Courtois

Victor Valdes has been linked with a surprise move to Chelsea. Here's our theory.

French website Le10sport has claimed Victor Valdes is on the verge of signing a pre-contract agreement with Chelsea in January which will allow him to move from Barcelona on a free transfer at the end of the season.

'Interesting', was our first reaction, before a general feeling of being puzzled as to why the club would make a move like this.

It does not make sense on a number of levels.

Firstly, the history between Valdes and Jose Mourinho, the two representing bitter rivals in La Liga, for Valdes to go and play under the Chelsea boss would be a deeply unpopular and unnecessary way to upset supporters of the club where he has spent the entirity of his professional career.

More poignantly is the competiton at Chelsea he would face, with veteran Petr Cech giving no indication he wants to give way, and the younger Thibaout Courtois waiting in the wings.

And this is where it begins to make sense. An 'Aha' moment if you will.

Barcelona have been strongly linked with wanting to make a move for Courtois at the end of the current season. To be successful in doing so they would have to persuade the goalkeeper he has no future at Chelsea.

What better way to start than to start feeding pieces of information to the press that Chelsea are looking at signing another goalkeeper, putting further doubt in Courtois' mind.

Chelsea fans will have to hope the Belgian and his agent can see straight through this not-so-cleverly concocted plan.

What do you think?
