Another midfielder is probably not what Arsenal need right now, but if reports emanating from talkSPORT are anything to go by then Arsene Wenger has never heard the saying ‘too many cooks spoil the broth.’
They suggest that the Arsenal supremo is ready to make a move for Lazio midfielder Hernanes. The Brazilian international, nicknamed ‘The Prophet’ because of his ability to see things on a football pitch others cannot, is said to be the target of another big splash in the transfer market from Wenger - who after getting his toes wet is now ready to dive-bomb into the colder winter water.
The price-tag attached to the reports is in the region of £25 million but Hernanes is a superb player. Likely to go to the World Cup in Brazil next summer, he can play anywhere in the midfield - including holding deep or sitting behind the frontman. He is versatile, top quality and probably worth that figure.
But is Arsenal think a deal is doable in January - I would not be so sure.
Lazio are trying to secure the Brazilian to a new deal at the club - as a way of showing his long-term commitment to the Roman club.
But he has told them that absolutely no talks will commence until after he has represented his home nation at a home World Cup - despite being happy in Serie A:
“I’m happy and satisfied at Lazio, but I’m firstly thinking about the World Cup. That is what is in my head right now and then we’ll see about a contract extension.”
Those quotes are not exactly historic either; they are from Tuesday - two days ago.
So considering that the player didn’t want to discuss an extension at his new club until after the World Cup - what is there that makes us think he would be willing to discuss an entire transfer to an entirely now team just six months before a competition he has likely been waiting for years to arrive.
Are Arsenal interested? They might be. Will Hernanes arrive in January - you can probably bank on it not happening.
Oh well Arsenal fans, who needs Hernanes when you have the new and improved Aaron Ramsey?
