Manchester United latest: Including Rooney and Fellaini

News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed he was unhappy playing a midfield role last season under Sir Alex Ferguson and that it was enough to make him consider leaving Old Trafford.

"Everyone at the club knew where I wanted to play and I think that's why I was disappointed. I got told to play in midfield and I didn't want to. I just think there had to come a point when, for my own career, I had to be a bit selfish really," he explained.

"I didn't want to come out saying anything. I just wanted to concentrate on my football. That's what I've done and that's what I'll continue to do. I'm not going to go around saying: 'I wanted to stay' or 'I wanted to leave'. I'll concentrate on my football and see what happens after that."

In team news, Marouane Fellaini’s injury is ‘not as serious’ as initially thought and the Belgian midfielder is expected to miss just two weeks instead of two months with his wrist injury.

Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere doesn’t believe Adnan Januzaj should be allowed to play for England due to his ethnic and national background.

“If you lived in England for five years for me it doesn’t make you English…I think the only people who should play for England is English people,” Wilshere stated in a conversation with reporters about Januzaj who was born in Belgium and has parents of Albanian and Serbian heritage.

Meanwhile, former Manchester City player Joey Barton has criticized Sir Alex Ferguson’s coaching, claiming he couldn’t put on a training session ‘to save his life’.

In transfer news, the Daily Mail claims Javier Hernandez is eyeing a move away from Old Trafford following his comments made about his hopes of playing regular first-team football at Manchester United.

“I strive for that [to start more games],” Hernandez told Mexican TV station Deportes Telemundo.

“I am working towards that - earning a spot as a starter. I know that my performance on the pitch will allow me to achieve that goal someday either here [in Manchester] or elsewhere for any other club.”
