This is the second time the winger has been named in the England squad and Townsend said: ‘It was nice to get my first call-up last month, it was a dream come true, but the second call-up shows more the way I’ve played since the last meet-up.

‘Obviously I’m delighted [to be called up] again and hopefully I can go there and try and get my first cap this time.’

Spurs could be in the hunt for another winger in the January transfer window as reports are linking them with a move for FC Basel’s Mohamed Salah. The Swiss club are expected to demand around £15m for the 21-year-old.

Former midfielder Danny Murphy has announced his retirement from professional football. Murphy spent one season at White Hart Lane and made 19 appearances, scoring two goals.

Harry Kane is targeting his first goal for the England Under 21’s in one of European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Lithuania.

Kane said: ‘I’ve scored at every level I’ve played at and this would be another step. It’s something I’d love to do. If the manager selects me, I know there will be a chance to score and I’m confident I’ll go out there and get on the scoresheet.’
