Manchester City latest: Defender reveals why he left; Milner wants derby form every week

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…

Manchester City’s players may have international matters on their minds for the next few days, but that has not stopped James Milner from talking about the Blues’ season to date.

Speaking to the Sun, the City and England midfielder revealed that Manuel Pellegrini’s training takes some getting used to…but also pays rich rewards.

There’s a high tempo at training under Manuel,” Milner said. “It’s intense but hopefully the fruits of all the hard work we’re putting in will show out on the pitch.

I think everyone has seen already the standards we are capable of reaching.”

The performances Milner is most proud of are those against Newcastle United in the opening round of fixtures, and the derby drubbing delivered to Manchester United last month.

But he realises the trick is now to perform at that high level consistently.

One player no longer at the Etihad is Kolo Toure, and the Liverpool defender has told the Express his reasons for leaving the Blues.

I had to take time and start playing again,” the Ivorian said, “because when you don’t play for your club it is very difficult to play for your national team.

You need to be fit to play and I wasn’t playing a lot for City, but this is a new start for me now and I am playing for a great club.”

Given City’s defensive injury woes, Toure may have found himself playing more regularly than he could have imagined before he made the switch to Anfield this summer. But having done so, his early season performances suggest Liverpool have signed something of a bargain.
