After Manchester United missed out on Thiago Alcantara this summer, they were briefly linked with signing Lazio midfielder Antonio Candreva.
The Express reported that United were to lodge a €12m bid for his services, only for the Italians to stand firm and issue a strict 'not-for-sale' stance.
It is easy to see why they were after Candreva. The 26-year-old registered an impressive seven goals and 16 assists in all competitions in 2012/13.
He has carried that form into this season, with three goals in his opening seven games along with one assist.
Now any prospect of a renewed effort from United to sign him in the January transfer window appears to have fallen by the wayside.
Candreva has signed a new five-year deal with Lazio which will take him through to 2018.
“Lazio can confirm that Antonio Candreva has signed a five-year contract with the club until 2018,” a statement on their official website read.
The midfielder has 14 international caps and is currently training with the Azzurri ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Manchester United will have to continue to focus their efforts elsewhere.
