Defoe praises Townsend but winger reluctant to be compared to Bale and Robben.

Andros Townsend he is not in the same league as fellow wingers Gareth Bale and Arjen Robben – after being compared to them by former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

Townsend said: ‘It is wonderful when people say such things but football is a tough world – and as quickly as you can be flavour of the month, you are only ever one or two games away from being slated.

‘These top players have been performing consistently for years at the highest level. If I ever achieve half as much as these players, I will be very happy.’

Striker Jermain Defoe has praised his teammate for his performances this season which has seen him join Defoe and Kyle Walker in the England squad.

‘He’s been outstanding and for a young player to come into the team and have that consistency, staying in the team and playing like he did against Chelsea, that’s fantastic.’

Under 21 goalkeeper Jonathan Miles has said it’s important for the side to learn the lessons from their 5-0 defeat to Liverpool last night.

Miles admitted that Brad Smith’s goal after half-time to make it 4-0 killed the game and denied Spurs’ any chance of getting back into the game.

‘We’ve got to bounce back now, and it’s all about the reaction after a bad result.

‘I think it killed us when we came back out and we needed to get the first goal and get out on the front foot, but they scored quite early in the second half. That hurt us a bit.’

Videos have emerged of West Ham supporters singing anti-Semitic chants towards Tottenham fans during Sunday’s game.
