Rodgers defends Enrique whilst under 21's thrash Spurs - Liverpool morning news

Also an update on the new Hillsborough inquests following a pre-inquest hearing yesterday

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has defended left-back Jose Enrique for his performances so far this season – and has said the Spaniard has been carrying an injury.

Rodgers has also said that on his day Enrique is one of the best in the country on his day in that position according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Liverpool boss said: ‘He has all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

‘He’s a threat when he goes forward and defensively he’s very difficult to beat.

‘The great thing is that Jose is always working at his game. He appraises himself honestly when we have chats. He’s one who is looking to improve his game and his passing.’

Enrique’s main rival for the position at left wing-back is Aly Cissokho who made a return from injury last night in the Under-21’s 5-0 victory over Tottenham at Langtree Park in St Helens.

Cissokho played a major role in the second goal which was scored by Cameron Brannagan after Adam Morgan had opened the scoring from the penalty spot.

Ryan McLaughlin, Brad Smith and Joao Carlos Teixeira were also amongst the goals.

The coroner in the new inquests into the Hillsborough disaster said yesterday that he was committed to starting the inquests on 31st March 2014.

The pre-inquest hearing in London also heard that some video footage may have been edited and that over 1,600 people have responded to the IPCC’s witness appeal.

The fight for justice has also been recognised at this year’s Pride of Britain awards.
