This weekend saw Arsenal and Chelsea both linked with the same striker … and at the same price.
The asking price for the player has also dropped dramatically, with the player who cost Los Blancos at least €35 million allowed to leave for just £17 million - according to several reports this weekend.
It comes as Benzema suffers some pretty poor form, and has received widespread criticism from his own fans over the effort he puts into games.
And with that in mind you wonder why anyone would pay this much for him.
But it is said that the London clubs want him - as Arsenal look to strengthen the striking position and Chelsea look to buy one who might actually, you know, score a goal.
But Benzema has lost his place in the France team because of his poor form - scoring just four goals, and none in La Liga since August.
But he has received backing today from somebody who plays with him as much as anyone.
Raphael Varane has only just returned from five-and-a-half months out after knee surgery - and the Frenchman has gone straight into the Real Madrid starting XI and the French national squad - such is his supreme talent.
And if his character references are as good as his footballing ability, then Benzema sounds a good signing.
Varane claims he is ‘not worried’ about the striker despite his current record in front of goal, as he suggests his time will come back around.
“We talk a lot. He is a hard worker. I believe that he is fine physically. Mentally, he is focused on his objectives. I am not worried about him.”
High praise from someone who knows him so well.
Benzema has a reputation for being somewhat lazy, so he will be pleased to hear these comments, as it certainly puts doubt in any prospective buyers mind over the reputation he has achieved from somewhere.
Should Arsenal or Chelsea make a move for Benzema?
