Fulham won't mind following their 1-0 victory, but would they have had a case to blame the referee had they not been victorious this afternoon?
One of the highlights of today’s Soccer Saturday was watching former Liverpool player Phil Thompson growing increasingly irate with every fresh decision from referee Roger East during Fulham’s match against Stoke City.
Having not yet seen the game, I cannot comment on East’s performance, but I can get a pretty good idea from Thompson’s befuddled explanation of rejected penalty appeals and narrowly-avoided red cards.
With Fulham desperate for a win – and Martin Jol seemingly clinging on to his job by his fingernails – the Cottagers may have had a case for stating they were up against 12 men rather than 11. But in the end a Darren Bent strike gave the home team a much-needed victory.
But how fair was Thompson’s appraisal of the official’s performance. This is not an opinion piece; it is a piece seeking opinion.
So if you were there, or you have seen the referee’s performance, let us know what you think…
