Could Nacho Monreal move elsewhere in order to assure himself of a place in the Spanish squad next summer?
Spain announced their squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers this weekend, with one noticeable call-up really catching the eye.
There was a first senior call-up for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno - who has been linked with Real Madrid, Everton and Manchester United in recent weeks.
He celebrated signing a new deal with his current club with the announcement from Vicente Del Bosque that Moreno was in his squad.
He has now been called up to the squad mainly because of the injury to regular incumbent, Barcelona swashbuckler Jordi Alba, who has a hamstring problem.
Moreno will now however have his eyes set on making it to the World Cup next summer, and with Alba a shoe-in there is no doubt that the man who would make way currently plays for Arsenal.
Nacho Monreal was signed in January for an undisclosed fee, widely reported as £8.3 million, from Malaga.
He has 14 caps for his country, but is now 100% the second choice left-back behind Kieran Gibbs in the pecking order - with Gibbs in magnificent form this campaign.
For Monreal a place in the World Cup squad is now under serious threat. Before, there has been little to no competition for the second left-back slot, but Moreno presents a serious threat to his place and his recent inclusion in this squad confirms his arrival.
For Monreal, every minute he sits on the bench is another point in the cons column when it concerns Del Bosque making his decision on who acts as back-up for the attacking and crucial Alba.
Moreno has no such worries, playing almost every game for Sevilla and getting the upper hand on his more experienced rival each time he takes to the field while Nacho watches.
Come January, it may be an issue that Monreal feels is necessary to take seriously. Nothing seems to hint he is unhappy in North London, but the chance to help his country defend a World Cup will not be passed up to watch England’s third-choice left back keep him at bay.
Do you think Monreal could ask for a move this winter?
