Arsenal starlet in hot water for ‘breaching art’

Costa Rica USA Qualifier

Joel Campbell is now on Arsene Wenger's radar ... and FIFA's apparently, after the Costa Rican was sanctioned for diving.

Arsenal sent Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell out to perennial Greek powerhouse Olympiakos this season - after a similarly effective deal with Real Betis last term.

The 21-year-old was supposed to return to Betis this summer - but a disagreement on how much the Seville-based club would pay for his services left Arsenal cold, who then renegotiated with the Greek champions.

Campbell recently scored his first goal for the club - but has been making the headlines here for very different reasons.

The young attacker has been sanctioned by FIFA for ‘’a reprimand for breaching art. 57 of the FIFA disciplinary code.”

Article 57 is basically the Ashley Young rule and talks of violating the ‘’principles of fair play or whose behaviour is otherwise unsporting”.

So what did Campbell do? Well he dived, essentially.

Although dive is perhaps a strong word, more acting.

And the Oscar for best male in a starring role goes to … Joel Campbell. His theatrics after what appeared to be an accidental brush with American international Matt Besler are certainly worthy of recognition by the Academy.

Besler stands around sort of comically unperturbed by the antic of Campbell, who is rolling around as if just shot by a sniper in the crowd, but is then booked to his disbelief.

US Soccer fans were let outraged by this and the story received some publicity, which is why FIFA needed to act.

Whether his amateur dramatics will impress Arsene Wenger remains to be seen, but we are guessing that the Frenchman ‘’uhhhh …. did not see it’’
