The 19-year-old midfielder is on loan with the Championship side for the rest of the season and he made history, becoming the first player to ever score for Wigan in European football.
Powell was sent on loan when it become obvious very quickly that he wasn’t going to play any part in David Moyes’ first team plans at Manchester United this season. He’s doing everything United would expect from him.
Powell’s first goal wasn’t a result of individual brilliance, it came after a poor attempt to clear a cross from Maribor’s goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic. The goalkeeper fluffed a punch attempt, simply guiding the ball to Powell who nodded in.
His second effort was more a thing of beauty, showcasing the reasons why United decided to make a big £1.5 million investment to sign him from Crewe Alexandra.
Powell danced inside from the right hand side, dodging challenges that were flying in before producing a brilliant finish from just inside the penalty area as he rifled the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.
He’s now bagged three goals during his spell with Owen Coyle’s side and he’s just done his chances of starting regularly the world of good.
What do you make of the strike?
