The fact Arsenal had to turn to Nicklas Bendtner in their League Cup game last week said everything about the lack of strength in depth up front at the Gunners.
'What happens if Giroud gets injured?' is a regular talking point in pubs and in stadiums, with the Frenchman in supreme form at present.
Fortunately the transfer window means the Gunners only need to hang on until January, but with reported target Karim Benzema struggling desperately for confidence and form at Real Madrid it should come as no surprise they are looking at alternate options.
The striker concerned is Porto sensation Jackson Martinez, who was prolific in his debut season in the Primeira Liga.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola - who have a mixed track record of accuracy it is fair to say - report that Arsenal are monitoring the striker.
They report: "Jackson Martínez has a new suitor. Arsenal, the current Premier League leaders, may soon formalize a proposal for hiring of striker of FC Porto."
Martinez has a release clause of €40m, or £34.8 million, meaning if the Gunners want him - they know exactly what they need to do to bring him in.
The striker is of course cup-tied for European competition, but could help Arsenal's Premier League challenge - a competition which the Gunners currently top after six games.
Martinez is a Colombian international and along with Falcao is part of a potentially devastating attacking line-up to be on show at next year's World Cup.
Porto signed Martinez from Mexican side Jaguares for just £7.7 million in 2012, with Liverpool one of the teams to pass up the opportunity. A replacement for Falcao, he went onto score 31 goals in 40 games last season.
Teams were reluctant to pull the trigger on signing the 27-year-old this summer for the big price demanded, wary of him being a one-season wonder, but this season he has continued his form.
Martinez has six goals in eight games for Porto, and if he continues scoring, don't be surprised if Arsenal are not the only side to make a bid for him in January.
Is Martinez the striker Arsenal need?
