Uzbek linked to Arsenal fails to grab chance to impress against rivals

Arsenal fans may recognise the name Odil Ahmedov.

Arsenal fans should set their diaries for June 2014, for like clockwork a link to Uzbekistan international midfielder Odil Ahmedov will appear.

It has happened over each of the past three off-seasons, but each time the talk surrounding the Anzhi Makhachkala man fails to materialise into anything.

Arsenal and Odil Ahmedov - A familiar story with a predictable ending?

But on Thursday night he was presented with the opportunity to impress against Premier League opposition, Arsenal's rivals Tottenham in the Europa League.

If he still harbours his dream move to England, he will be disappointed in how it turned out, when he could have earned brownie points among Gooners by scoring and beating Spurs. It didn't happen.

Tottenham won the game in Russia with ease, scoring twice in the first half to run out 2-0 winners, while Ahmedov endured a game to forget.

During his 90 minutes on the pitch, he recorded the lowest passing accuracy rating of any outfield  player on the pitch, a miserable 61 per cent.

Ahmedov attempted seven long balls, but found a teammate with just one of them.

He put in five crosses, but failed to find an Anzhi player on a single occasion.

The midfielder would have one shot on goal against Tottenham, but you guessed it, the effort was off target.

Ahmedov said in the summer: "It is true I have interest from Arsenal though – their scouts have watched me in every match this season."

Well he may just hope they took the night off last night.
