Real Madrid legend convinced striker to reject Arsenal and Spurs for life of mockery in Spain

Ciprian Marica has revealed Raul was a pivotal force behind his decision to join Getafe on a free transfer last week.

We have had a lot of fun at the site recently covering the transfer tale of Romanian striker Ciprian Marica. It became clear a few weeks ago that the originally shrugged at interest from Arsenal in the former Schalke 04 players free agent services was indeed concrete - as was the interest that then followed from their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

And Marica did plenty of things throughout the search for a new club that gained attention. Training with his former club Dinamo Bucharest for instance - as well as rumours of a break-up in his well-documented relationship back in his homeland.

A little too well documented as far as Marica was concerned, after he reportedly gave one over-zealous paparazzo a snapshot of his own when things reportedly descended into fisticuffs.

So a feisty character who either North London club would have loved at their disposal.

Unfortunately though he had advice from a higher power, at least that is how Real Madrid fans would view it.

Their former striker Raul has almost deity like rights at the Santiago Bernabeu, where to speak ill of the man is as if to speak ill of the dead - nobody does it and if you do, not within earshot of another Madridista.

And he played with Marica at Schalke 04 during his later years - and was reportedly behind the move.

The simple way Arsenal can still get their hands on Angel di Maria

Raul knows the club president, and would have likely painted a beautiful picture of his beloved Madrid for his former Bundesliga team-mate to consider.

Marica himself confirmed that Raul had been a major factor in his decision to join Getafe:

"I talked to Raul, who is a good friend of the president. I asked and he helped me. I am an attacker and the important thing is to score goals. The important thing is that they know how to play. Scoring goals is important to me and I hope to score many."

So now Marica will play for Getafe, although he won’t be known as Marica.

As we told you the other day he will be known as Ciprian, as the Spanish translation for Marica is a rather vulgar and offensive term for a homosexual man.

Unfortunate translation leads ex-Arsenal and Spurs target to change name on his shirt

Raul might have told him about that before he signed on the dotted line!
