Everton latest: Liverpool legend raves about Lukaku, new crest and defender could leave in January

Romelu Lukaku

All the latest news and gossip from Goodison Park.

Everton were rampant against Newcastle United on Monday night, despite the final score being an unnecessarily close one at 3-2.

Romelu Lukaku bagged two of the goals, and he was heavily praised by a legend of Everton’s local rivals Liverpool.

Jamie Carragher was in awe of his excellent performance at Goodison Park - saying this of the damage he can cause in that team:

"He's the type of player you look at as defenders and you think 'that's probably why I retired'. You don't really want to be coming up against players like that.’’

Everton have unveiled their new club crest - to almost unanimous approval amongst fans. The previous design, only released this summer gone, was heavily criticised by the clubs supporters for being cartoonish and for compensating core values of the crest - including the motto ‘Nil Satis Nisi Optimum’.

It was chosen by 80% of fans and will come into use next season.

Everton and Liverpool January Bosman target already has squad number assigned elsewhere

The Liverpool Echo today claim that Roberto Martinez has his eye on a number of players for January business - including a Spanish based winger. Andres Guardado, who has been playing at full-back this season, is reportedly a transfer target for Everton and Martinez is reported to be very keen on the Mexican international.

Meanwhile John Heitinga looks set to leave in January so that he can play at the World Cup in Brazil for Holland. The Dutch international cannot currently get a look in with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin the defensive pairing. And he has admitted he may have to leave, despite his love for the club and its fans:

‘’I took a risk by staying at Everton … maybe something will happen for me in January. Everton know I will be a free agent next summer. I want to get back into the Holland team…At the moment I’m not in contention to be selected.’’

Everton are one of many teams casting their eye over 15-year-old Norwegian youngster Kjetil Haug. The teenage goalkeeper is to undergo a second trial at Everton this autumn - but will also take time to experience Manchester City and Arsenal - and has just finished a stint with Manchester United.
