Jose Mourinho is ready to add to his squad by bringing in Argentine international Nicolas Otamendi - according to reports in Spain.
Newspaper Marca write:
"Porto's Argentine defender, Nicolás Otamendi, is set to wear Chelsea colours next season. On the radar of several European clubs for a while now, he has been snagged by the Premier League.
"Both Barcelona and Milan made a bid for him this summer, but ultimately they failed to reach an agreement with the Portuguese club.
"The Portuguese outfit is now taking it as a given that Otamendi is on his way out, and will soon be reporting to Mourinho. The 'Albiceleste' international has been brought in by specific request of the former Real Madrid coach."
Otamendi is an Argentine international of 15 caps, although while he has not been selected in the squad since 2011, a move to the Blues could reignite the 25-year-old's prospects.
What is ambiguous from Marca's report is why it states Otamendi will sign for 'next season', rather than in January, or if that even is the case at all. Otamendi's contract does not expire until 2015.
It is certainly a report out of the blue, so to speak. Chelsea have been linked with a Porto centre-back with regularity in recent months - but it is Eliaquim Mangala, rated at around £20 million rather than Otamendi.
Otamendi is valued at around half that price and has played in every game so far this season for the Portuguese champions, signing from Velez Sarsfield for £7 million in 2011. He holds an Italian passport so would not require a work permit.
There is no suggestion that a deal is done from Chelsea's official website, so fans should certainly treat this with suspicion as they learned with several reports emanating from Spain over the summer.
We have tracked down a video of him in action below:
Chelsea fans what do you make of the reports? Is he a player you would like?
