On this day: Walcott 'Sign Da Ting', Mata stars and Baldini rejection

Walcott Celebrates

On the 2nd October 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 2nd October 2013, but a year earlier

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 2nd October 2012.

Sign Da Ting

This time last year Arsenal forward Theo Walcott was embroiled in a serious contract to-and-fro with the club.

The England international’s contract was expiring at the end of the season, and with the sale of Alex Song and Robin Van Persie in the summer window there was obviously a fear that Walcott could join them out the exit door – with Liverpool and Chelsea said to be monitoring the situation with belief.

Do Arsenal really have 'a chance' of winning the Champions League?

On this day a year ago however the situation took a lighter turn, as a grime record urged him to ‘sign da ting’.

The Roxy Arms released the humorous rap video eluded to Walcott’s wish to play up front and sitting on ‘the bench, listening to Frimpong chat about dench’.

In the end it might have worked, Walcott signed a new deal in January this year.

A Mata of time

Juan Mata bagged a brace in a star turn against Danish champions FC Nordsjaelland – as Chelsea romped to a 4-0 win.

The reality was Chelsea played poor but Mata was magical.

A year on and Mata appears to have just won his way back into the affection of Jose Mourinho after a difficult start to the season … oh and Chelsea won 4-0 away from home in Europe again last night.

Franc-No Baldini

Tottenham Hotspur failed in their attempt to appoint Franco Baldini as the clubs director of football. Andre Villas-Boas was keen on employing somebody for the role but Baldini decided to stay with Roma.

Until the end of the season that is. Of course Baldini now has the job and was the driving force behind the signings of Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and Erik Lamela this summer.
