How Liverpool may play when Johnson and Cissokho return

The duo are due back from injury later this month so how long will it be before they return?

For the past couple of weeks, Brendan Rodgers has had Liverpool playing a system involving three centre-halves and wing-backs.

Whist Liverpool have operated this system, they have yet to play Aly Cissokho or Glen Johnson within it, something which you would think would suit these two players a bit more than Jose Enrique and Jordan Henderson.

Both of these players are due back in the next month and are sure to add a bit more pace out wide as they are naturally more accustomed to getting into positions to put in a decent delivery than the men currently occupying those positions in Jose Enrique and Jordan Henderson.

Enrique has improved his attacking game a great deal in the past year or so, and seemed to have built up a decent understanding with Luis Suarez when the Spaniard often decides to bypass the midfield.

But it will be interesting when Johnson comes back into the side and operates the right wing-back role, as his attacking prowess is well documented whilst Cissokho is a lot keener to get at his opposite number a lot more to create chances in the final third.

If these two were to start on the flanks when they return to full fitness they could allow Liverpool to operate with a greater deal of fluidity and pace, and perhaps a better final ball – which has been one criticism of Jordan Henderson in that makeshift role.

With these two returning it would give Liverpool a couple of other options rather than having wingers or central players having to cover in those positions in the meantime. Such as this weekend where a massive player in the midfield is missing in Lucas and not having reservations of switching around other positions.

If it runs smoothly enough for Liverpool that these two do return to the side with no other injuries picked up in the meantime, and Suarez and Sturridge keep their form up front, Brendan Rodgers may be on his way to moulding a team that is quick and has plenty of attacking threat whilst being solid defensively, whether that will be high up the pitch or in their own half.

But just for fun, here's how the side could line up when Johnson and Cissokho return:

Toure, Skrtel, Sakho

Johnson, Lucas, Gerrard, Cissokho

Coutinho/Moses [depending on how quickly Coutinho returns to full fitness]

Sturridge, Suarez
