Manchester City will be looking for back-to-back wins in the Champions League as they welcome Bayern Munich to the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City don’t have great recent memories of playing Bayern Munich in the Champions League but they are arguably a better side than the last time these two giants of European football squared up.
City look like one of the pace setters in the Premier League this season and they strolled to a convincing win against Viktoria Plzen in their first group game, which will give the German side plenty of food for thought.
Here is the side Manuel Pellegrini could go with as City look to put six points on the board.
GK – Joe Hart
Hart will start in goal and he should be determined to put in a solid display. There have been questions over whether he did enough to prevent Aston Villa’s winner last weekend and those questions will be in the back of his mind as he looks to prove a point.
RB – Pablo Zabaleta
Zabaleta should continue at right-back and his pace and experience will both prove valuable. The Argentinean is great getting forward and providing width on the right hand side but he’s also extremely effective when he has to tuck in close to the centre back.
CB – Vincent Kompany
Kompany looked like a different player against Aston Villa to the one that performed so well in the Manchester derby. He shouldn’t have any problems getting himself up for such a big match.
CB – Matija Nastasic
Nastasic also didn’t have a great game against Aston Villa but Pellegrini should retain him in the starting side because he has that burst of pace, which can help him to recover after a mistake and it also allows City to play a higher line.
LB – Aleksandar Kolarov
Gael Clichy was on the bench against Aston Villa but Pellegrini will probably resist the temptation to throw him into the cauldron for this game. Kolarov is a threat in an attacking sense and when he’s focused, he’s a fairly good defender and he’ll also be looking to set the record straight after last weekend.
RM – Jesus Navas
The temptation is to retain Milner because of the work he can do defensively but Navas is one of the best wingers City have available and a player who can hurt Bayern Munich going forward, whether he stays out wide or cuts back inside.
CM – Yaya Toure
Toure is having one of the best spells of his Manchester City career so there is no benefit in dropping him to the bench. He can burst forward in attack and he knows how to sit deeper and protect the back four when needed.
CM – Fernandinho
Fernandinho is competent on the ball, he throws in a tackle and his fitness is superb which allows him to run box-to-box throughout a 90 minute period. City will be looking to him to fill in when Toure goes forward and to advance when Toure is pinned back.
LM – Samir Nasri
Pellegrini couldn’t be blamed for giving David Silva a return to first team action in this game but the Spaniard’s match fitness is nowhere near where it should be. That means Nasri is likely to continue on the left hand side where he’ll be tasked with offering a threat but also offering support to Kolarov.
ST – Sergio Aguero
Aguero will play if he’s recovered from the knock which kept him out of the match against Aston Villa. His movement, pace and skill as a striker playing different ways in attack makes him a real headache for Bayern to get to grips with.
ST – Edin Dzeko
Dzeko should keep his place in attack because he’s a direct contrast of Aguero. His height creates presence and it also provides City with another way to attack and an extra threat from set pieces the side wins in dangerous areas.
What do you think the eleven should be?
