Liverpool latest: Gerrard feared Suarez departure and Argentinean teenage sensation

A round up of the latest news and transfer rumours connected to Liverpool.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says he feared Luis Suarez was going to leave the club. Gerrard has revealed he woke up every day worrying about whether Liverpool were going to sell the striker.

“When you have a player as good as Luis Suarez, you know that the big clubs are going to want him. I was waking up every morning, hoping that nothing would happen and that he would still be here,” said Gerrard.

Gerrard has also suggested he is not bothered or focused on talks of Liverpool winning the Premier League title. Gerrard says the main aim for the team is to focus on what they’re good at, showing what the team can do well and that should lead to positive results.

Chelsea’s Juan Mata, a player Liverpool have been linked with in the recent past, says he certainly considers the Reds to be a title rival.

“We must keep fighting because there are other teams that seem to be very strong now, such as Arsenal or Liverpool, although this is just the beginning,” the Spanish midfielder wrote on his blog.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has suggested that any of six sides could win the Premier League title, with the top sides needing to kick on as he feels the standard of the mid-table sides in the Premier League has improved dramatically.

In transfer news, goalkeeper Pepe Reina has admitted that Arsenal were interested in signing him over the summer before he moved to Napoli on loan. Reina looks destined to leave the club this summer on a permanent deal with several top European sides reportedly interested in him.

Reports have suggested that Liverpool are still tracking the progress of teenage forward Luciano Vietto. Last May the player’s agent said Liverpool were one of the sides tracking him and they appear to still have an eye on the 19-year-old following a report today in the Daily Mail.

Brendan Rodgers has said his side were spurred on to win at Sunderland due to results going their way elsewhere. Manchester City lost while Spurs and Chelsea drew, which allowed Liverpool to move up to second in the table, two points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool win 3-1 against the Black Cats thanks to goals from Daniel Sturridge and Liverpool Suarez, with the latter grabbing a brace on his first Premier League start following suspension.

In other news, on loan youngster Suso impressed over the weekend for Almeria but he wasn’t able to stop his side slipping to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona. Suso is on loan with the La Liga side until the end of the season.
