Tottenham fans mock Willian's omission from Chelsea clash

Brazil Goal

Willian snubbed Tottenham to sign for Chelsea late in the transfer window, but was it the wrong decision?

One of the more bitter transfer sagas of the summer came late on, with Willian made available by Russian club Anzhi Machachkala.

The Brazilian came close to signing for Tottenham Hotspur, undergoing a medical at the club - before accepting an 11th hour offer from Chelsea.

More revelations over the weekend claimed the player even signed a contract with Spurs, but one which was not yet fully ratified between all parties to be made official.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho famously taunted rivals Spurs after the transfer hijack, hinting 'they should have done the medical in secret'.

So the first clash of the season between the two clubs, with Willian facing the team he turned down should have been compelling viewing, right?

It was a fascinating affair no doubt, but the edge related to the Brazilian was a non-factor - with the £30m omitted from the starting line-up, and did not even make the substitute's bench.

He is expected to feature in the Champions League against Steaua Bucharest in midweek, but his omission from the Premier League fixture was a telling snub that he himself is not seen as vital in the eyes of Jose Mourinho, perhaps supporting the theory he bought him in part to stop Spurs strengthening.

Tottenham went out and bought Christian Eriksen instead, so we aren't sure quite how effective Mourinho's tactics were if that were the case, and there are few if any Spurs fans who would swap the pair given the Dane's sensational start at the club.

In reaction to Willian being left out ofSaturday's fixture, there were quite a few cutting, and humorous comments flying about on Twitter from Spurs fans.

Here is a selection of what they had to say...
