Suarez 'world class', manager makes comparison to United duo - Liverpool morning news

Anfield Pitch

Reaction to Liverpool's win over Sunderland which takes them to within two points of table topping Arsenal.

Liverpool have moved up to second in the table after a 3-1 win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light which saw Luis Suarez score twice on his Premier League return.

Daniel Sturridge got the other goal and set up the two for Suarez but victory came at a price for the Reds’ after midfielder Lucas Leiva picked up his fifth yellow card of the season, meaning he will miss next weekend’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

And Lucas thinks that Uruguayan Suarez will have a fantastic season for the Reds’ after his contribution to Liverpool’s victory.

Lucas told the Liverpool Echo: ‘He is showing again just how good he is. He is a world class player and it is so important to have players like that if you want to fight for good things this season.

‘Luis showed today with his performance that he is really committed to the team and to the club. He just wants to help us and we will try to help him too.’

Manager Brendan Rodgers believes there is more to come from the partnership between Suarez and Sturridge after they combined for two of the goals yesterday, and compared them to some of the partnerships in the league.

‘I’m not sure there’s two better in the league. There are some wonderful partnerships around, of course, such as Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

‘But those two are right up there with the best in the country.

‘I think you saw today that they want what is best for the team. Goalscorers want to score goals, and they are judged on the goals they score and how many assists they make.’

In other news, Liverpool ladies won the Women’s Super League title for the first time yesterday after a 2-0 win over Bristol Academy at the Halton Stadium in Widnes.
