The Ivory Coast international has struggled to break into Newcastle's starting XI, primarily due to injury, but also because of Dutchman Vurnon Anita's impressive displays.
Tiote has admitted that sitting on the bench came as a shock to him - but feels his performance against Leeds United in the Capital One Cup last week merits a return to the first team.
"It has been a shock not being in the side. But I was injured early on and couldn't get my place back.
"No-one wants to be sitting on the bench but now I'm feeling good again. Against Leeds, my timing felt better but I need time on the pitch to keep improving, so I hope I've done enough to stay there.
"Sometimes my game goes up and sometimes down. However, I always give everything."
Tiote is expected to displace Anita at Goodison Park tonight, a decision which is unlikely to be popular with Newcastle fans.
Here's a Twitter straw poll and support for the former Ajax man, Anita, is pretty comprehensive.
What do you think? Does Tiote deserve to start against Everton tonight?
