This summer Arsenal had plenty of fingers in an equally plentiful amount of pies when it came to their transfer dealings - with the main target seemingly being Luis Suarez of Liverpool.
That pursuit seemed to kill off any potential deal for Gonzalo Higuain, who was also linked with the club throughout the summer.
The Argentine wanted out of Real Madrid in order to pursue more regular first team football across the continent - and it appeared for a while Arsenal was his first choice.
But they dawdled due to the Suarez flirtation - and Napoli swooped in, tying up a deal after just a couple of days’ worth of negotiations.
And yesterday, Arsene Wenger spoke of the debacle for the first time.
The Gunners take on Napoli in a massive Champions League game this week - with both teams top if the Group after separate 2-1 victories against Marseille and Borussia Dortmund respectively.
The ‘Group of Death’ was always going to present Arsenal with tough challenges, now facing the striker they dropped the ball on in regards recruitment adds extra spice to proceedings.
Here is what Wenger said about the potential record breaking deal, which never came to fruition:
"We were working on two or three targets and he was one of them," Wenger said. "It didn't come off in the end, that doesn't take anything away from his quality.
"Napoli took advantage of that at the right moment, it's more about timing as well.
Indeed they did, after a replacement for Edinson Cavani they moved fast for Higuain - who has become instantly revered in Naples.
But Wenger is not to fussed about it all, he feels it is 1-1 between Arsenal and Napoli at the moment - in the transfer market at least:
Because Arsenal of course did break their record signing amount, well they smashed it, after Mesut Ozil arrived for £42.5 million:
"In the end Real Madrid sold two great players, one of them went to Napoli, one went to Arsenal so it's 1-1 on that front."
So it is 1-1 in the transfer market - what will the score be on Tuesday when they meet on the pitch?
