Manchester United toiled this summer to replace the departing Paul Scholes - with many a player linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Two of those players were Barcelona players in the form of Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara. In the end however Fabregas committed himself to Barca while Thiago joined his former mentor Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.
They were also recently linked with Anders Iniesta after he rejected Barcelona’s first contract offer, a contract he still expects to sign.
While staying in Spain Ander Herrera was also linked, but the price Athletic Bilbao were quoting fell way off the valuation Manchester United were willing to pay for the international.
But never fear, as another Spaniard, this one at Barcelona, could be on his way to Old Trafford. According to reports today in Catalan newspaper Sport 21-year-old Sergi Roberto is set to be offered to Manchester United in a €6 million deal.
Liverpool and Chelsea have previously been linked with a mooted interest in the player, who has failed to make a place in the first-team his own after his debut in 2010.
Whether the Spanish Under-21 international is the answer to Manchester United’s woes is certainly up for debate. He is a talented player though, and at that price would be an absolute steal.
So signing him would be a potentially excellent piece of business.
But you have to wonder if it matters for Barcelona.
If Sergi does come good in Manchester, and becomes one of Europe’s top midfielders like United would need him to, it would only be a matter of time before Barcelona signed him back anyway…
Here he is in action…
