Reina is on loan with Serie A side Napoli where he’s quickly consolidated his position as number one with six appearances in all competitions.
It should be a blow to Liverpool because of his experience and quality, which he’s proved consistently throughout his career in top flight football.
However, Liverpool’s signing of Simon Mignolet over the summer means they have a talented goalkeeper in their squad and it’s the Belgian who has made Reina doubt whether he’ll ever play for his parent club again.
“No. At the moment it’s difficult to think about being a Liverpool player next year. They have a young goalkeeper in Simon Mignolet and the manager prefers him to me. That’s the reason why I’m here and he will be at the club next year as well,” said Reina.
Those comments give the pretty clear impression that Reina doesn’t want to play second fiddle to Mignolet which would more than likely be the case if he moved back to Anfield ahead of next season.
Mignolet signed a five-year contract when he moved from Sunderland in the summer, which shows Brendan Rodgers has a lot of faith in the 25-year-old and sees him as the club’s long term number one.
“There’s no reason to think I’ll be a Liverpool player from now on but we’ll see where the future takes us. It’s been a good move so far and I don’t regret what happened. I would have preferred to say goodbye in a different way,” added Reina.
It opens up the question of where Reina’s future will take him because there will be several top clubs interested in signing him at the end of the season.
The most obvious destination is Barcelona, offering Reina a route back to Spain with Victor Valdes unlikely to sign a new long term contract at the Nou Camp, which creates a need for a goalkeeper at the Spanish champions.
Barca have the resources to buy out the last two years of Reina’s Liverpool contract and the chance to go back to Spain is something he may find extremely appealing.
In terms of Premier League interest an obvious destination is Arsenal.
Wojciech Szczesny has done an admirable job in goal for the Gunners this season but Reina would be a high quality addition to the Arsenal squad and he’d more than likely snap up the number one position.
It would take care of a position for the Gunners which has been a headache over the last couple of seasons and would also give Arsenal a great chance of being able to maintain their impressive defensive record.
Napoli are also going to have a chance to get him permanently because that’s where he is right now and Rafa Benitez being the Italian side’s manager will make them more appealing to the 31-year-old.
It’s a shame he’s likely to leave Liverpool but a side is going to benefit tremendously.
Where do you think he’ll go?
