VIDEO: Arsenal flop defends controversial 'handball' goal

Andre Santos Brazil

Brazilian defender Andre Santos is at the centre of controversy in Brazil.

Flamengo are a desperate team at present in the Brasileiro, despite their famous name.

They are just two points above the relegation zone, and coach Mano Menezes resigned after a 4-2 loss at the hands of Fran Merida's Atletico Paranaense.

Another ex-Arsenal player, Andre Santos, is a member of the Flamengo team and despite sitting out the previous defeat was recalled for their match with Botafago.

Selected in midfield as he has been frequently since leaving Arsenal this summer, the left-back scored a crucial goal as they drew 1-1.

But it was how he did it which has caused controversy in his homeland, with Santos accused of using his hand to divert the ball into the net.

He told newspaper O Globo:

"Everyone will say it was the hand, but it was so fast. If hit in the head and hand, I can not speak. Just saw the ball as it was coming in and I celebrate. Let those who want to speak, but the goal is there and you can not take it."

Not exactly a vehement denial, and at this point Flamengo can't be choosy about how they go in; some would argue that cheating however is going too far.

Take a look for yourself and decide:

Handball?
