Liverpool latest: Including Sunderland team news and interest in PSG star

All of the latest news and gossip connected to Liverpool.

Luis Suarez is likely to retain his place in the Liverpool starting line-up against Sunderland after playing 90 minutes in the League Cup defeat at Manchester United. Daniel Agger faces a late fitness test with Martin Kelly ready to step into the side should he fail it.

Agger took full part in first team training earlier today as he continues to get over a rib condition which affected his breathing.

Brendan Rodgers has set his side the aim of being in the top six by Christmas. Liverpool enjoyed a fantastic start to the season but have now slipped down to fifth position.

“Now we can only concentrate on the league up until Christmas. So we have to make sure we stay up in that top six in the league and keep fighting and hopefully we can reinforce in January,” said the gaffer.

Suarez’s return has had a beneficial impact on goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who says the forward will inspire him to become a better player.

“Everyone knows the quality he has - I see it every single day in training when I’m one v one with him and you see what he can do, so he will improve me as a goalkeeper as well,” said the Belgian.

Brendan Rodgers has challenged young winger Raheem Sterling to sort his life out following several incidents away from the field in his personal life. Sterling was cleared of assault before getting into trouble after failing to report to the DVLA that he had sold a car.

In transfer news, Liverpool have been connected with the potential signing of PSG star Javier Pastore. The playmaker is thought to be disgruntled with life at the French club although it would take a mega offer from the Reds for them to fend off other interested parties.

Other reports suggest Liverpool will go head-to-head with Juventus to sign Ivorian striker Lacina Traore. Traore could be available this winter from Anzhi Makhachkala and Liverpool have been linked with him for a number of weeks.

Another player that Liverpool remain firmly connected to is Barcelona defender Martin Montoya. Montoya will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season if he decides not to renew his deal at the Nou Camp, with Arsenal also reportedly ready to go in for him.

In other news there’s great news for the club’s holding midfielder Lucas who has been recalled to the Brazilian national side. He hasn’t featured for his country since November 2011.

“Today the feeling is like when I got my first call up to play for Brazil. I can't put into words how good I am feeling. Now that I have been called up, my dream is to be a part of the World Cup in Brazil,” said the 26-year-old.
